On Wednesday, 26th March 2025, a group of enthusiastic Year 9 students had the exciting opportunity to attend a Language Outreach event with GCHQ. This unique experience highlighted the vital role languages play in intelligence and security, with a special focus on learning Mandarin Chinese to crack codes and uncover key information in order to ensure that a cyber attack was stopped.
Throughout the day, students engaged in hands-on activities designed to challenge their problem-solving and linguistic skills. One of the most exciting aspects was using Mandarin Chinese—a language known for its complexity— in intelligence work to decode messages and gain crucial insights. They also explored how language skills, combined with analytical thinking, can open doors to careers in national security.
Mrs Broom, Head of the Languages Faculty, who accompanied the students, said:
“The event was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to see the real-world impact of language learning. Using Mandarin to crack codes was particularly engaging, and it was wonderful to see their enthusiasm grow throughout the day.”

The visit was an eye-opening experience that demonstrated the power of language beyond the classroom. We hope it has inspired our students to continue developing their linguistic abilities and explore the many opportunities that language learning can offer.
A big thank you to GCHQ for an unforgettable day of discovery and learning!
