The whole of year 7 recently attended the Halle Orchestra School’s Concert, ‘Are You Sitting Comfortably?’, at The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester.
This inspiring event, linked to World Book Day, combined literature and music through a stunning selection of canonic musical repertoire. Pupils were captivated by performances of Duka’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, Saint-Saens’ Danse Macabre, and OffenBach’s Can-Can from Orpheus in the Underworld, amongst others.
The concert supported the Music National Curriculum, reinforcing pupils’ understanding of orchestral instruments and Programme Music.
From the moment the orchestra began, pupils were in awe as the music came to life before their eyes. The conductor Euan Sheilds and narrator Tom Redmond led the musicians through a thrilling journey, showcasing the different instrumental sections in action. The pupils enjoyed every moment, saying that “It was really good because we got to see all the instruments in the different sections, and they were brought to life.” Another pupils summed up the experience, “It was very exciting and good for our education, everyone enjoyed it.” Another pupil simply stated, “We absolutely loved it.”
“We are incredibly proud of the pupils’ exemplary conduct. They were a credit to themselves and the school, demonstrating enthusiasm, curiosity, and respect. This unforgettable trip has left a lasting impression, inspiring a newfound appreciation for orchestral music that will hopefully continue for years to come” – Miss Chapelhow, Trip Leader (Teacher of Music and Head of Drake  House).
