In May, the Year 7 Girls’ Cricket team enjoyed a memorable day at the Lancashire Cricket Foundation’s ‘Spirit of Cricket’ Festival, held at the iconic Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.
Accompanied by Mr Lockwood, the team had the rare opportunity to play on one of the country’s most prestigious cricket grounds. The festival brought together 18 schools from across the region, with each team representing a different country. QEGS proudly took on the role of The Netherlands, helping to create a vibrant and inclusive international atmosphere throughout the event.
The day featured a packed schedule of activities, including skill-based training sessions, small-sided games, and competitive matches against other schools. Beyond the action on the pitch, the girls also enjoyed meeting ‘Lanky’, Lancashire Cricket Club’s popular mascot, and spent time with professional player Danni Collins, who offered inspiration and insight into the game at the highest level.
The festival focused not only on performance but also on the core values of cricket, with teams earning points for teamwork, sportsmanship, and positive encouragement, as well as match results. The QEGS girls excelled in all areas, demonstrating strong communication, mutual support, and a positive attitude throughout the day.
Their efforts paid off with an impressive third-place finish overall—an achievement that reflects both their cricketing ability and their commitment to the spirit of the game.
The event was widely praised for its inclusive and celebratory atmosphere, and it provided a valuable opportunity for young players to develop their skills while representing their school with pride.
Well done to all involved for an excellent performance and for being outstanding ambassadors for QEGS on such a special occasion.
