Year 12 A level students expressing an interest in a medical career attended a talk with Nick Mullin from the Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust to hear more about working in mental health services.

Also in attendance was a Junior Doctor called Lowri, who is currently completing her Psychiatry rotation in Barrow. She discussed the importance of work experience, her training and experience as a recently-qualified Doctor.

Nick engaged the students with discussions about a range of mental illnesses, including Schizophrenia and Eating Disorders, sharing a wide range of anecdotes about his experiences with patients. Nick also spoke about examples of perception problems from social media and discussed the difference between delusions and hallucinations.

Students actively participated in the talk and asked about a range of career options, including medicine and nursing. The visit gave students lots of ideas for how to explore their own career choices and how to source appropriate placements.
