Whilst the summer is a chance to relax and reset for a new academic year, Year 10 pupil Nicky Saunders used the break to compete across the country and even brought some silverware back to QEGS with her!

Nicky, who competes in a range of sports including athletics and fencing, started the summer with a 4th place finish at the U15 Discus at the English Schools Championships, followed by a busy throwing season with many competitions.

In August, Nicky achieved bronze in the Northern Athletics Finals held in Wavertree, quickly followed with a spot at the English Championships in Bedford, having qualified in hammer and discus throw. Finishing 10th in the hammer throw, Nicky also managed to achieve a new personal best at the championships, with a huge throw in discus of over 35 metres earning her a silver medal. This now places Nicky at 3rd place nationally in U15 discus category.

Nicky has also picked up recognition in the Cadet Fencing world, placing 6th at the U17s Sabre and 9th in the U20 Sabre at the Championships in September. This now ranks Nicky at 4th in Cadet for her age, earning her a place in GB Team 1 to fence at the International held in the Copper Box Arena, Olympic Park in London, this half term.

Everyone at QEGS is proud of Nicky’s success and wishes her luck at her upcoming competitions!
