It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Old Blackburnian Professor Alan Haworth who died on 17th December 2017, aged 89 years.
Alan first ventured to Zambia (then Northern Rhodesia) in 1957 and worked there for many years. In addition to being a pioneer of mental health there, he worked tirelessly to combat aids, continuing to work full-time well into his 70s. He was the longest serving medical practitioner in the country.
He was greatly loved by his family and friends and leaves his nieces Karen and Penny and nephew Chris.
Alan was a huge supporter of Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, financially and with his time, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A service and cremation will be held at Pleasington on Friday 19th January 2018 at 11.30am. Enquiries to The Alty Funeral Service, Broomfield Place, Blackburn BB2 1XF, Tel. 01254 503240.
