PSHEE with RSE and British Values

Our PSHEE with RSE curriculum at Queen Elizabeth’s Primary School has been carefully designed with our Queen Elizabeth’s Primary School family in mind. We have created a curriculum which has taken into account pupils’ religious, cultural and social backgrounds, whilst ensuring that they are prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are taught to discuss and deal with their feelings and the challenges they may face as they grow up. We teach pupils the knowledge and the skills they need to manage their own lives now and to prepare them for life as a well-rounded citizen, ensuring that they know how to keep themselves and others healthy and safe.

In September 2025, we trailed the new Pol-ed curriculum which has been carefully Co-developed by teachers and West Yorkshire Police. We have now launched this across the full curriculum for all year groups. The resources have been designed to complement the DfE statutory guidance and the PSHE Association Programme of Study, ensuring we remain fully compliant while delivering high-quality lessons. Pol-Ed materials promote resilience, informed decision-making, financial awareness, and responsible citizenship, while also supporting positive relationships and community cohesion.

We understand it can be very confusing as a child growing up, with lots of mixed messages from the media and we strongly believe it is important that our pupils have a sense of belonging. We aim to involve all children by learning about all of our cultures, beliefs and celebrations and teach them to acknowledge and respect diversity. We will acknowledge Remembrance Day and St. George’s Day, as well as all of the most significant religious festivals.

PSHEE with RSE is taught as a subject each week and developed further through school assemblies, daily reflection time, our Primary School Values (the three R’s) and open and honest, age-appropriate conversations. PSHEE is threaded throughout their everyday school lives, clubs and in extra-curricular events.

The RSE curriculum (taught in Trinity Term) has been very carefully created between 2022 and 2024. The process started with a pupil focus group to help understand the pupils understanding this then stemmed into a discussion with the staff and a RSE curriculum was created. Staff were then given the opportunity to read the new curriculum (Implements in September 2023) and offer their further input. Once this initial phase was completed an online parent consultation was delivered and the new curriculum shared. Parents were given the chance to ask questions and email any feedback. Feedback from this was very positive and the new curriculum was then delivered to pupils.

Our curriculum is made up of six modules that are taught throughout the year. It is a unique, progressive and effective scheme of work, using the Pol-Ed scheme of learning which aims to prepare children for life, help them really know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever changing world.

British Values

At Queen Elizabeth’s Primary School, we actively promote British Values throughout our daily lives to ensure our pupils leave us prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law. Our weekly assemblies allow us to make British Values meaningful and relevant to our pupil’s lives.

The Key Values we teach are:

Democracy

The Rule of Law

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

Individual Liberty

We discuss all British Values both directly and indirectly through daily teaching, specific PSHEE teaching and assemblies, these therefore underpin our 3 Primary School Values (The 3 R’s)

Democracy

Pupil voice is important to us, we ensure that all of our pupils are heard and that they know they can come to speak to any member of staff at any time. Each year, staff select the most responsible pupils to become Prefects and in turn, the prefects can apply for the roles of Head Boy and Head Girl who are voted for by all pupils and staff. Two school council members are selected by the pupils each year to represent their class. Pupils are encouraged to discuss any issues or things they wish to see change with the Head Boy and Head Girl, Prefects and our School Council representatives. These are then discussed at School Council meetings and fed back to the Primary Deputies and Head of Primary School.

Past changes have included:

– Changes for the menu at lunch time

– Changes to our School Values

– Voting for treats

The Rule of Law

We believe that our pupils are developing into model citizens and to do so means that they have to abide by certain laws, albeit in class, around school, at home or out in the community. Pupils are taught the values and reasons behind laws (that they govern and protect us) and to break a law results in a consequence. Our School behaviour policy was created to al-low pupils to understand right from wrong. Positive points are rewarded for positive behaviour and negative points for not following the rules. We have our 3 School Values (The 3 R’s) Ready, Respectful and Resilient to help pupils to follow a rule of law and make positive choices. We have also welcomed visits from PCSOs and the Fire Brigade to show how the rule of law is fundamental within society.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

In our Queen Elizabeth’s Primary School family, we have a diverse set of culture, religious and social backgrounds and we instil in the pupils the importance of understanding and respecting each and every individual regardless. We use our 3 School Values to teach pupils that their behaviour can impact other people. We teach this through our assemblies, RE and PSHEE curriculum and by celebrating different significant festivals in each religion and culture. Our 3 School Values are highly visible around school and are seen on posters and certificates too.

Individual Liberty

All of our pupils are taught to understand that they have the right to exercise and share their rights and personal freedoms (including teaching how to share an opinion respect-fully). We believe it is our job to teach pupils the boundaries to make choices in a safe manner through our PSHEE curriculum and events such as Safer Internet Day. Pupils can also make their own choices through choosing extra curriculum activities, clubs and their 30 crystal class treats.
