PE & Swimming

We are very luck at Queen Elizabeth’s Primary School to have our very own sports coach who delivers specialised PE and Games classes to most pupils. Pupils in EYFS begin by focussing on their fine motor skills during outdoor play and forest schools, towards the end of EYFS they move to whole class PE lessons. In KS1, pupils build on these skills and begin to practise their fundamental throwing and catching skills before learning to play simple team games. When pupils move to KS2, their PE lessons are carried out at our sports site in Lammack. Pupils learn a range of skills and apply them to different sports, these include gymnastics, dance, football, rugby, cricket, golf, netball, basketball, rounders, cross country and athletics. During their time down at Lammack, pupils are exposed to as many different sports as possible as we are aware that many of our pupils do not get a chance to access these outside of school. We explicitly teach the children about the importance of physical exercise and a healthy diet, and talk about ways to keep healthy and safe. Children learn to play cooperatively, taking turns with others and take account of one another’s ideas about how to organise their activity.

We also compete with other schools in the area in local sports tournaments as well as offer internal competitions for our children, our house sytem plays an important part during these events too.

In addition to our PE lessons, pupils at Queen Elizabeth’s Primary School are very fortunate to have access to our own swimming pool. Pupils in Key Stage 2 have the opportunity to use the pool throughout the school year, with most pupils receiving a swimming lesson every other week.
During these sessions, pupils are taught how to swim and, as their confidence and ability develop, how to refine their skills and become increasingly effective swimmers. Swimming lessons also place a strong emphasis on water safety. Pupils learn how to stay safe in and around the water.
As pupils progress through Key Stage 2, these important skills are developed further. By Year 6, pupils take part in dedicated water safety and lifesaving lessons, helping them to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to respond safely in and around water.
