At Queen Elizabeth’s Primary School, we promote the study of a foreign language (in our case, French) because of its increasing importance in both personal development and in global society. Class teachers teach French using our Salut! programme which is an interactive and engaging way to learn a new foreign language. Starting at Year 3, pupils learn basic greetings and words which are developed as the pupil’s progress through KS2. There are 3 main strands of Primary language learning – oracy, literacy and cultural understanding therefore, we do out best to include these in our teaching. Pupils are encouraged to listen and repeat each lesson before writing down key vocabulary and building upon this year after year. As they progress, pupils are encouraged to being writing in full French sentences, developing their understanding of French Grammar and ensuring correct punctuation is used, which in turn prepares them for continuing to learn the language in KS3. In addition to learning the French language, time is also spent learning about the French culture and their traditions.

As well as learning French, on European Day of Languages, pupils in all year groups are given an insight into other languages of the world. In the past pupils have learnt Welsh, Spanish, German, Arabic and Cantonese, as well as learning about the different countries the languages are spoken in.
