Mathematics

We teach Mathematics in some form each day, all pupils are taught 4 Mathematics lessons each week as well as daily Fluent in 5 sessions to improve rapid recall and fluency. We also teach Mathematics in a cross-curricular way through lessons such as Geography, Computing, D.T and Science.

Here at Queen Elizabeth’s Primary School we follow the ‘Maths Mastery’ approach using high quality resources from the NCETM. Staff use the lesson objectives and classroom resources to create impactful and purposeful lessons which are progressive. In each of these lessons, pupils have access to concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract ideas to further their mathematical knowledge. Lessons follow the structure of:

  • Starter – A mental section based on prior or to aid fluency learning linked to the lesson objective
  • Talking Time – A teacher led activity where pupils are encouraged to participate using practical manipulatives or written methods. Teacher use the ‘I do, we do, you do’ approach.
  • Activity – Pupil’s independent activity based on previous talking time.
  • Talking Time and Activity are then repeated as appropriate.

Rapid graspers within the lesson are taught to ‘Dive Deeper’. A Dive Deeper, allows the pupils to demonstrate their depth understanding of the activity. Pupils can choose to Draw It, Explain It, Make A Mistake, Tell A Maths Story, or Prove It. The PDF below shows some examples.

Multiplications

Throughout the Primary Phase pupils are expected to build a rapid recall of multiplications to 12×12. These will help them solve problems quicker and more effectively as they move through school. In Year 4, pupils will sit the statutory Multiplication Tables Check. Pupils practise these at school in various ways from rapid recall games to mini multiplication question sets, we also encourage pupils to access Times Table Rock Stars daily at home too.

EYFS

IN EYFS pupils learn about numbers and mathematical concepts through short lessons burst and explore them further in play. Pupils also learn about numbers and Mathematical ideas through play. They learn to accurately touch count, the formation of numbers 1-10 and the value of each number. They begin their journey by looking at a ‘Number of the Week’ before progressing further.
