Old Co

What is Old Co?

Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School was founded in 1509 and over its long history has seen many changes. The most recent of these was in 2014 when QEGS Blackburn Academy Trust was set up to run the current school. When this happened, the former independent school did not disappear and continues to exist as a separate legal organisation we call ‘Old Co’.

Old Co owns the freehold of the land and buildings of the school which are leased to the Academy for a substantial length of time. It also owns and manages the financial assets of the former independent school. Old Co is a Charity with Trustees made up of ex pupils, parents and retired teachers.

What does Old Co do?

Old Co deals with legacy issues associated with the former independent school and manages its assets. It then uses the income from the financial assets to make donations for the benefit of the Academy and its pupils.

Regular donations are made for Prize Giving and the school’s reward scheme. There is also an annual sum provided to subsidise school trips and visits. Recently Old Co has contributed to the refurbishment of the Brooklands building and funded the new Sixth Form Scholarships.

There are restrictions placed on Old Co’s ability to give money to the school partly because some of the Funds themselves have restrictions on what they can be used for. More importantly the organisation must always comply with Charities Law with regard to its donations.

How to contact Old Co?

The current chairman of Old Co is Louise Crabtree, an ex teacher of the school. If you would like to contact Louise or Old Co, please do so through the school.
