It is with great sadness we announce the death of a former member of staff Mr Michael Scaife (1962 – 1966)
Mr Albert Eastham, his friend and colleague, at QEGS has written an Obituary.
My ex-colleague and friend Michael Scaife died on the 30 March 2024 at home in Alderley Edge. He was 88. Married with three children all of whom spoke at his church funeral on April 16th.
Michael was a pupil at Manchester Grammar School. He studied History at University College, Oxford and received First Class Honors. During his National Service in Germany, he was a Sergeant. After a year with the Economist in London he decided to teach history. His first job was 2 years at the Liverpool Institute.
It was in September 1962 that he came to QEGS as number 2 to George Eastwood in the History department. I think that the Headmaster, Mr Kemball-Cook asked Michael to start and chair The Elizabethan Debating Society which he did conscientiously, continuing to exchange Christmas cards with Michael Fordyce the Secretary until he died.
Michael was thoughtful, kind, and considerate. He moved on to Cheadle Hume Grammar School in 1966 as Head of their History Department and he finished his career there as Deputy Head for 21 Years.
Holidays were taken in Germany and Austria with his wife, Ann, who like himself was a lover of music. In fact, they met at a musical festival in Salzburg.
Michael and I were big friends with Frank Walmsley, the Geography Teacher, 1963 – 1966, who died 19th April 2020. Both were gifted and dedicated teachers.
Michael Scaife was a Christian, a church warden for 10 years at St. Philip and St. James’s Church in Alderley Edge. His wife writes to me to say that his funeral on the 16th of April went smoothly, and many tributes were paid to him.
Michael Scaife is sadly missed by his family, colleagues, and friends.
