The end of May 2021 saw Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School games afternoons transformed into a sunshine filled festival of English schools football.

Over 500 QEGS pupils participated across five year groups with every year 7, 8 and 9 pupil taking part in a bid to gain points for their tutor groups.

The curtain was raised by the year 10’s who selected 10 individuals to represent each tutor group. After 10 hotly contested games the pre-tournament favourites, RSC duly delivered, finishing top.

Tuesday was the year 9s turn to battle it out, with 140 pupils raring to go. A spirited performance from CDB saw them finish second narrowly pipped by PTH who became this year’s winners. A great afternoon for our first whole year group competition of the week.

Wednesday saw an upset! The hotly tipped favourites DME filled with their array of talent were pipped to the post by MJL in a tightly contested competition. Celebration of the day went to Hassnain Ahmad and his AHB teammates after they took an early lead in their first fixture.

Our penultimate afternoon and the battle of the language department saw STG come out on top, much to Mr Gould’s excitement. A year group brimming with talent did themselves, tutors and their head of year Mrs Marinner proud with their attitude and application. Well done all.

Year 7 played out our final afternoon in glorious weather. What a way to finish, again another 140+ pupils involved with outstanding performances in each of the A, B & C team competitions.

Special mention of ‘Players of the Tournament’ go to Umarah Iqbal, Mohammed Bilal Kiyani and Aatika Zahra who each received a wonderful prize bundle from Mrs Dewhurst. With Mr Cunningham looking on, his tutor group did him proud just managing to pip DJP on goal difference. A huge well done to all pupils for a brilliant afternoon played in the true spirit of sportsmanship.
