QEGS Trustee reflects on nearly 30 Years of Service and Transformation

David Peat, a long-serving trustee of Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School (QEGS), has reflected on nearly three decades of involvement with the school, highlighting a journey that began in 1997 and spanned key milestones in the school’s development—including its transition to academy status and its growth into one of the region’s most dynamic educational institutions.
David’s initial connection with QEGS came during the NHS 50th Anniversary Art Competition for Schools in 1997, where the school’s artistic talent caught attention—and earned a prize. That same year, while seeking a new school for the family’s eldest son, Nicholas, a conversation led to an application to QEGS. Nicholas joined Horncliffe (as it was then known) in 1998, followed soon after by his younger brother, Daniel.
In 2005, David was invited to join the School’s Governing Body as a Parent Governor. Already experienced in governance—having served at Haslingden High School, St Joseph’s Park Hill in Burnley, and on the Finance Committee at UCLAN—the invitation marked the beginning of a new chapter of deep involvement with QEGS.
By 2010, David was appointed Deputy Chair and assisted in the Free School bid. This effort culminated in QEGS opening as a Free School Academy in 2014, a milestone that allowed for new funding streams and expanded opportunity. In 2015, David was appointed Chair of Trustees.
Among the many achievements during his tenure, two stand out for him: the school’s resilient response to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the successful effort to boost pupil numbers—from under 500 to nearly 1,300 today.
Over the course of 15 to 16 years as Safeguarding Link Trustee Governor, David observed the growing complexity of issues facing school communities.
David expressed deep gratitude to QEGS staff for their unwavering commitment to student welfare and academic excellence.
QEGS thanks David for all his time and hard work over the years and wishes him a happy and peaceful retirement.
